I love making my own taco seasoning! With my DIY taco seasoning, I can control how salty it is, how spicy it is, and best of all, there arenโ€™t any filler ingredients in it. There are no added sugars, starches, and anti-caking agents in my homemade version. It only takes a couple of seconds to put together so you donโ€™t have to go out to purchase it specifically the next time you feel like making tacos.

Key Ingredients You Need

Ingredients needed to make taco seasoning.
  • Spices โ€” Itโ€™s important that you use fresh spices for this recipe. Since spices lose their flavor and potency over time, you end up with stale seasoning if you use stale spices to make this seasoning mix.

Tips For This Recipe

  • Be sure you are purchasing American-style chili powder and not chile powder made up of ground chiles.
  • If youโ€™d like to make this spicier, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to it.
  • You can use smoked paprika or sweet paprika, depending on how youโ€™d like for it to taste.
  • I do not recommend swapping dried oregano for fresh oregano. You want to use dried oregano to keep it shelf-stable.
  • If you only have onion salt or garlic salt, I recommend not adding any additional salt to the blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store a homemade seasoning mix?

To keep spices fresh, always place them in a cool dark place, away from a heat source, in an airtight container. Doing so will make sure they stay fresh longer.ย

How long does this last?

While spices donโ€™t technically expire, they do lose their flavor over time. To tell, I usually take some visual cues. Once the spices lose their bright, vibrant hues, it indicates that the flavor has dulled. I would check for freshness after about a year.

How to use taco spice mix?

When it comes to seasoning meat, I usually use around 1 to 2 tablespoons of the seasoning mix per pound of meat. Outside of using it on meat, you can also add the spice mix to soups, vegetables, beans, nachos, and more! It goes great on my Taco Bowls.
