Whether you need a recipe for Taco Tuesday or you’re just craving tacos, these carne asada tacos are so easy to make. The bold flavors paired with simple, fresh ingredients will have you making this recipe on repeat.
Key Ingredients You Need
- Carne Asada — Carne Asada is loosely translated from Spanish to "grilled meat." If you do not have a grill, you can make this in a cast-iron skillet on the stovetop. I used Black Angus Beef Thin Sliced Sirloin Tip Steak from ALDI, which worked great.
- Corn Tortillas — Corn tortillas are higher in fiber and lower in fat than flour tortillas while being 100% gluten-free! You can swap the corn tortillas for flour tortillas if you prefer. The fantastic ALDI Pueblo Lindo White Corn Tortillas tasted incredible.
- Cheese — I always serve my tacos with a sprinkle of shredded cheese. I used ALDI Happy Farms Mexican Shredded Cheese and I was so happy with the quality.
Tips For This Recipe
- When cutting the carne asada, slice against the grain. Against the grain means you cut opposite of the path of the muscle fibers. Doing so will cut through the fibers, making the flank steak much more tender.
- Before cutting the steak, give it some time to rest so the juices can redistribute throughout the steak and don't end up all over the cutting board when sliced.
- Don’t skip warming the corn tortillas. When heated, they are softer, so they're less likely to break while you make the taco. Also, the tortillas are more flavorful when warmed!
- If you don’t have a gas stove, you can warm the tortillas in a skillet, or if you’re in a pinch, the microwave.
How to Make Carne Asada Tacos
Step 1: Marinate the carne asada (check out the link in the recipe card below for the full marinade recipe) for 30 minutes to 4 hours and then let the meat come to room temperature. Heat your grill on high heat and brush some olive oil over the grates to keep the meat from sticking. Then cook the meat for a few minutes on each side. The great thing about Carne Asada is that the meat is cut thin so it will cook through quickly. Take the meat off of the grill once you have achieved the desired doneness and let it rest for 5 minutes before cutting it into small pieces for the tacos.
Step 2: Warm tortillas over a stove burner.
Step 3: Add carne asada on top of each tortilla.
Step 4: Top with some guacamole.
Step 5: Top with a homemade Pico de Gallo. To make Pico de Gallo, simply dice the 3 Roma tomatoes, ½ onion, 1 jalapeño, ½ cup of cilantro, ¼ cup of lime juice, a big pinch of salt, and mix together. The fantastic produce that I found at ALDI really made this salsa shine.
Step 6: Finish off the carne asada street tacos with shredded cheese.
Frequently Asked Questions
Toppings are the best part about tacos! I highly recommend making my guacamole, pico de gallo, chopped cilantro, and chopped onion but feel free to change things up with what’s in your fridge. More ideas for toppings are sour cream, sliced jalapeños, sliced radishes, shredded lettuce, refried beans, sliced avocados, lime crema, chimichurri sauce, and corn salsa.
The ALDI Happy Farms Mexican Shredded Cheese I use is a blend of cheddar, Monterey jack, asadero, and quesadilla finely shredded cheeses. If you can’t find it, you can also try Pueblo Lindo cotija cheese or queso fresco. Or use all of them! There’s no such thing as too much cheese!
You don’t want the tortillas to get cold as you are working through them. You can use a tortilla warmer or you can use your oven to keep them warm. Set your oven to 250F, and then wrap the tortillas in foil before placing them inside. Doing so keeps the corn tortilla warm without drying them out.
You can grill the meat ahead of time if you wish. Reheat the steak on the grill or stovetop before you cut and serve the tacos. Toppings such as pico de gallo can be made ahead as well. These carne asada tacos are best enjoyed immediately.

If you fold down the top of the plastic bag it will stay open and makes it much easier to pour in your marinade.
