Whether you need an easy side dish for the holidays or a busy weeknight, this crispy and flavorful shallot green beans recipe is perfect for any occasion. It comes together in a few simple steps, one skillet, and under 20 minutes.

No one will say these green beans are boring. The crispy shallots add a savory but sweet note that complements the fresh green bean flavor. Itโ€™s a fresh, fuss-free version of the classic green bean casserole. Everyone will be reaching for seconds! Want another easy side dish? Key Ingredients You Need

Ingredients needed to make crispy shallot green beans.
  • Shallot โ€” Shallots are a type of onion with a delicate and sweet flavor and a hint of sharpness. To prepare the shallot, slice the ends of the shallot and then peel back the skin before slicing it.
  • Green beans โ€” Try to find green beans that are vibrant in color. Skip any green beans that are brown or have wrinkly spots. Try to get green beans that are roughly the same size so theyโ€™ll cook evenly. You can trim them if you have some extra long beans.
  • Oil โ€” I like to use olive oil, but you can use any neutral oil for cooking the shallots and green beans. Avocado oil is a great option.

Tips For This Recipe

  • If youโ€™re not confident that you can slice the shallots thinly and evenly, you can use a mandolin.
  • You can trim the green beans by lining them up on a cutting board, facing the same way, and slicing off the tops with the stems. The stems are not pleasant to eat as theyโ€™re tough and woody, so make sure to remove them.
  • Make sure to use a large skillet so you donโ€™t steam the shallots and green beans. Itโ€™ll also be much easier to saute.
  • Some delicious add-ins to the shallot green bean dish include crispy chopped bacon, shaved parmesan, chopped nuts, or a few handfuls of greens like arugula or baby spinach!
  • I like to use French green beans, also known as haricots verts. You'll have to increase the cooking time if you use a larger variety of green beans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my shallots not crispy?

If the shallots were not as crispy as you like, you could try soaking them in salt water for a couple of minutes next time. The salt will draw out the moisture, so it crisps up better in the skillet. Just make sure to pat them dry before cooking.ย

How do I store leftovers?

Store any leftover shallots and green beans in an airtight container for up to 4 days. You can reheat them in a skillet or microwave.ย

Can I use frozen green beans?

Frozen green beans wonโ€™t be as crisp in this recipe, but you can use them if thatโ€™s what you have on hand. Quickly thaw the green beans in water, pat them dry, then cook as directed.ย
