There is nothing easier to make than avocado toast. It’s tasty, healthy, and filling. However, what’s not easy is parting with $10 for it at a restaurant for brunch when it costs so little to make a home! Here’s how you can make avocado toast at home in 5 minutes or less.
Key Ingredients You Need
- Avocados — You can’t have avocado toast without the avocados! They come in many varieties such as Bacon, Fuerte, Gwen, Hass, Reed and Zutano being the most common ones you’ll find in stores. Use whichever kind is in season.
- Whole grain bread — I prefer whole grain bread to get some extra nutrition in my morning meals but you are welcome to use whatever bread you have on hand.
- Flavor boosters — To add extra flavor, we add some lemon, red chili flakes, salt and pepper.
How to Make the Best Avocado Toast
Step 1: Cut avocado in half and remove pit, then scoop out flesh of avocado into a small bowl. Mash up avocado with a fork, leaving it slightly chunky.
Step 2: Toast 2 bread slices in the toaster.
Step 3: Spread the mashed avocado on top of the toast.
Step 4: Top off with a squeeze of lemon juice, salt & pepper and red chili flakes.
Recipe Variations
- Top it off with an egg: scrambled, over easy, or poached
- Sprinkle Everything But the Bagel Seasoning on top
- Add smoked salmon on top
- Sprinkle nutritional yeast on top
- Top with some crumbled bacon
- Add some microgreens on top
- Drizzle honey over top
- Drizzle hot sauce over top
Tips For This Recipe
- Don’t skip adding the lemon, salt and pepper as it really helps bring out the avocado flavors.
- Use fresh lemon instead of bottled lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice sometimes has a bitter taste to it so it's best to use fresh lemon.
- You can mash your avocados directly on the toast to save yourself the effort of washing a bowl but if you’re making a lot to feed a crowd, I’d suggest mashing them in a bowl.
- You can easily make this gluten-free by using gluten-free bread.
- Thick sliced bread works best to hold up the avocados and any potential toppings but again, feel free to use whatever you have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some varieties of avocados will darken once they are ripe, however, some other varieties stay green! So the best way to check the ripeness of avocados is by giving them a gentle squeeze. If it gives in to your squeeze then the avocados should be ripe
To quickly ripen the fruit, place them in a closed paper bag with a kiwifruit or apple on the countertop. They produce natural ethylene gas that will help speed up the ripening process of avocados.
You can store them at room temperature until they’ve ripened. Once ripened, enjoy immediately or store it in the fridge to slow down the process so they don’t over ripen.
