Key Ingredients You Need

Ingredients needed to make honey BBQ wings.
  • Chicken wings — You can use 16 whole chicken wings or a combination of 8 wings and 8 drummettes. It’s up to you! Bone-in wings are ideal as they’re more flavorful and juicy.
  • Flour — Tossing the wings in flour help lock in the moisture of the chicken wings and helps absorb the honey BBQ sauce.
  • BBQ sauce — Pick your favorite sauce. You can use sweet, smoky, or spicy BBQ sauce. The possibilities are endless with the variety of BBQ sauces on the market.
  • Honey — To add some sweetness to the sauce.

Tips For This Recipe

  • Make sure to pat dry the wings before using them. Excess moisture will make it difficult for the wings to crisp up in the oven.
  • For extra crispy wings, dry the skin before baking by leaving them uncovered on a rack in the fridge for 3 hours.
  • To add some heat to the wings, add a bit of sriracha to the honey BBQ sauce before tossing the wings.
  • Make sure to leave enough space between the wings so the hot air can circulate between them for even crispy wings.
  • Make sure only to add the sauce near the end. If you add the honey BBQ sauce to the wings too early, it’ll burn in the oven.
  • Lining the sheet pan with parchment paper will make cleaning up much more manageable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this on the grill?

For sure! If you have a grill, grill the chicken wings on high heat (425F) for 15-20 minutes, flipping every 3-5 minutes. Then toss the wings or brush them with the honey BBQ sauce and continue to grill for another 2 to 3 minutes. Keep a close eye on them to ensure they do not burn on the grill.

Can I make this in an air fryer?

If you want to air fry the chicken wings instead of baking them, keep in mind that it’ll take a few batches to do so as the wings need to be in a single layer. Air fry the chicken wings for 15 minutes at 400F before tossing them with the sauce and air fry for another 5 minutes.

Can I use frozen wings?

I recommend thawing the wings before preparing them to be baked. Baking them from frozen may lead to the exterior overcooking before the middle cooks through.

How do I store leftover wings?

You can transfer the cooked wings to an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days once they've cooled.

How do I reheat wings?

To keep the chicken wings crispy when reheating, heat them up in the oven until they’re warmed. In a hurry, you can reheat them in the microwave.

I really love this recipe, so simple to make and so very tasty. I've tried to modify a little by adding the zest of a lemon and juice of half a lemon to the BBQ sauce/honey mix, plus I like spicy food so I add a couple of teaspoons of dried Habanero flakes to the mix as well. The lemon rounds out the taste of the BBQ sauce and the Habanero flakes give the wings a bit of a kick. Delicious!
